What are the differences between fitness and bodybuilding?

What is Fitness?

When we talk about fitness, what comes to mind is people engaging in exercises and adopting healthy lifestyle habits to stay fit and healthy. Fitness is also a sport in which people showcase their level of fitness on a podium and work on improving their fitness by using exercise machines or weights in a gym.

Today, the term "getting fit" or "fitness" is used frequently in many places such as the gym, internet, and TV shows. However, we should not assume that being fit is just about building aesthetically pleasing muscles, having low body fat, or having cellulite-free legs, beyond the definition given above.

The definition of being "fit" is actually made as follows: "The degree of conformity of an organism to its environment and its ability to sustain its species."

Thus, when we look at this definition, fitness is not just about having aesthetic muscles, low body fat, and a beautiful appearance; it is much more than that!

Fitness is the ability to perform a given physical task in the safest and most effective way possible. You should have a clear philosophy about fitness: An athlete should be strong, fast, durable, flexible, agile, and, in short, athletic & aesthetic!

Therefore, you should not just develop yourself in a single level and deprive yourself of others! You should focus on your motor skills, develop in different adaptations, and train yourself in the best possible way.

What are the differences between fitness and bodybuilding?

Fitness also aims for our body to be in shape and healthy, and gym machines and weights are also used for this purpose. However, in bodybuilding, the concept of fitness on the podium is different: it is based on maximum muscle mass, minimum fat ratio (definition), and providing the necessary body postures in the best way possible.

Although the person does not compete as a bodybuilder on the podium, they apply bodybuilding principles in any sport that requires physical activity and performance. Developing muscles and burning fat are the most important steps to increase our performance.

Individuals who say "I don't want to get too bulky, being fit is enough" actually use bodybuilding to increase their fitness levels, but they express that they do not want to work for very high muscle mass.

We call bodybuilding the advancement of fitness levels with a high muscle mass in one context.

To become a good bodybuilder, one needs to work out with weights at a high tempo for many years and eat very strictly.

Increasing fitness (wellness) levels is rather about staying away from diseases, looking healthy, and disciplining the body to fit clothes. Running, walking, swimming, or even exercising at home may be enough for this.

While doing bodybuilding, it may be necessary to consume many calories and take in a lot of protein for nutrition. To do fitness, it is generally sufficient to stay away from unhealthy fast food and junk food, eat more vegetables and fruits.

Let's summarize the differences with the table below:
